spencerheslopMy name is Spencer Heslop and I live in Clearfield. I am a senior at Clearfield High School. When I was born, I had a neuro tube defect which was diagnosed as Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida gave me very low, lower body strength that affected my mobility, so I use a wheelchair or forearm crutches for sports and endurance.

I played many sports growing up and by the age of eight, I wanted to continue to play sports however, I could not keep up with the other kids. About that time, we found a city wheelchair basketball team which I absolutely loved. I kept playing on the city team and in 2010, became assistant coach and continue to do so. I also joined the new Jr. Wheelin’ Jazz basketball team. My wheelchair has allowed me to play the game that I love.

I have tried a variety of wheelchair sports including tennis, skiing, hand cycling, sled hockey, and others. My favorite sport remains with basketball. I love being active and have really enjoyed this team and I’m excited to compete again at Nationals as well as other tournaments.

I play the Alto Saxophone in Clearfield High’s Symphonic Band and have played in the Clearfield Community Band as well. I also play the piano.

I work hard academically and I love Science and Math. I currently have a GPA of 4.0 and hope to continue that. I am involved with the National Honor Society where I have the opportunity to help with various service projects. I am involved with Link Crew. Link Crew is a group that helps the new sophomores coming into the high school feel more comfortable and have someone to go to should they need help. We teach classes throughout the year to help them learn life skills.

I am an Eagle Scout and enjoy the scouting program. I enjoy looking for opportunities to serve through scouting, church and other youth groups.

I am really excited to compete with the Jr. Wheelin’ Jazz this year and play what I love to play.
